It's a useful concept to help understand how social change comes about and how it is resisted. I wonder, are your mates Euros? Do ask, see if they smile fondly...
Ex-TUC official now working for a consultancy that deals with corporate governance and shareholder engagement. I'm interested in getting the labour movement and the Left to understand the capital markets properly. There's plenty that needs fixing, but we need to get beyond simplistic anti-City and anti-business rhetoric to do it.

A Rebel's Guide To Gramsci by Chris Bambery (Bookmarks, 2006) was helpful for me as it is teeny, was cheap, and you can fit it in your back pocket.
But if you're after something weightier than that...?
Yeah I saw that somewhere. I am mainly intersted in the hegemony stuff. Does it cover that in any detail?
No, not in any great detail. And may I inquire why on earth you want to read about Gramsci re: hegemony?
Primarily because I'm interested in the stuff on hegemony. Plus a couple of mates (and my boss!) have said some of it is worth a read.

My boss was on that wing of the CP actually! Long time ago though - he's a Compass supporter these days.
Check this out, quite a good introduction to Gramsci by a former CP Euro, now Compass - hmm, sounds familiar...
